Association between Physical Activity and Medication Adherence in Korean Adults with Chronic Diseases

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS The aim of this study is to identify the differences of general properties according to the degree of physical activity(PA) in Korean adults with chronic diseases.

METHODS Data used in this study include ¡°Korea Health Panel (2010-2011)¡± conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs and the National Health Insurance Service. The study subjects were total of 8,904 people and 4,615 patients with chronic diseases whose age were 20 to 64.

RESULTS First, the factors of general properties which showed significant differences according to the degree of PA were gender, age, BMI, marriage state, education level, type of occupation, smoking and drinking state, etc. Second, in the group of the patients with chronic diseases, Middle exercise group showed higher MA than the Low exercise group, and High exercise group showed lower MA than both Low and Middle exercise group.

CONCLUSION According to the degree of PA, the results of this study indicate that the differences in gender, age, BMI, marital state, education level, economic activity, occupation, smoking and drinking state, etc., also it indicates the relationship between the MA and PA which improves patients¡¯ health and quality of life. Further studies should explore the relationship between the PA and the various health behaviors beyond the MA, so it will be effective to make the strategy of PA, which induce continuous participation and action of health behaviors in the patients with chronic diseases.
